SBP grows up to 20 different pea varieties every year. The growers are all situated within the Scottish Borders, East Lothian and north Northumberland and are fully able to exploit the excellent growing conditions to their advantage. The favourable growing conditions of the region allow SBP to manage the harvesting of the crop with greater precision and so achieve the very best quality.
SBP have been growing peas since 1972 and have historically matched the standards of the market leaders. The majority of the pea crop attains an AA grade classification. All the growers farm within a 30-mile radius of the factory and the region is a relatively under- populated area, resulting in a quiet road system that allows the crop to be frozen within 150 minutes from the start of harvesting.
SBP grows up to 4 broad bean varieties every year. The climate of the region is particularly conducive to the production of broad beans. During the growing cycle broad beans can be very susceptible to disease but in the clear climatic conditions of the area beans thrive.
